French Drains

Channel Drains

TYPES OF GRAVEL
Choosing the right gravel depends on your project’s needs—whether it’s strength, drainage, or a smooth finish. The right size and type ensure durability, stability, and long-lasting results.
3/8” Minus (with fines)
Smaller gravel (up to 3/8”) with fines.
Best for: Top layers where a finer, smoother finish is desired, or for driveways with light traffic.
Why use it: Creates a tighter, smoother surface; excellent for walkways or light-use driveways where aesthetics matter.
5/8” Minus (with fines) – Most Versatile
Medium-sized gravel (up to 5/8”) with fines.
Best for: Final top layer for driveways, parking areas, and roads.
Why use it: Packs down smooth, resists ruts, and creates a durable driving surface. It is suitable for residential driveways to commercial lots.
5/8” Minus Recycled Asphalt (RAP)
Crushed and processed asphalt millings, sized to 5/8” with fines.
Best for: Driveways and parking areas that need a surface closer to pavement.
Why use it: Once compacted, it binds together, reducing dust and creating a firm surface. A cost-effective alternative to paving.
5/8” Clean (or Screened)
5/8” gravel without fines — only uniform-sized stone.
Best for: Drainage applications, French drains, and decorative areas.
Why use it: Because there are no fines, water drains freely through it. Not recommended as a driving surface by itself since it doesn’t compact.
1-1/4” Minus (with fines)
Gravel up to 1-1/4” mixed with fines.
Best for: Base material under driveways, parking areas, and roads.
Why use it: The larger rock provides strength while the fines lock it in place. Excellent for long-term stability under top layers.
1-1/4” Clean
Larger, uniform stone without fines.
Best for: Drainage fields, septic systems, erosion control, and areas needing high permeability.
Why use it: Excellent for moving water freely; keeps drainage areas from clogging. Not used as a driving surface.
3” Crushed Concrete
Recycled concrete broken down to ~3” chunks, includes fines.
Best for: Base layers where you need a very firm, compacting material; filling deep low spots before installing top layers.
Why use it: Affordable, eco-friendly, and compacts extremely well. Creates a tough foundation.
Ballast (2–4” angular rock)
Large, heavy stone with minimal fines.
Best for: Stabilizing soft ground, building up a strong base under roads or driveways, or creating parking pads for heavy equipment.
Why use it: Provides excellent drainage and strength, but too rough for finished surfaces.
